There's a Whole World of Figurative Language!!

Hey Everyone,

Here's an assignment for you....

If you got my letter (which I hope you did, telling you about this blog...) leave a comment below in the comments section! It'll let me know you're visiting.

Today, we're going to talk about figurative language!

In class today, we discussed Taylor Swift and how she uses figurative language in her songs.
(Miss Battaglia loves Taylor Swift because she uses lots of figurative language! She's obsessed.)

So here are some examples of figurative language in Taylor Swift's songs!

Alliteration: repetition of beginning sounds (repetition=repeat. So, the beginning sound repeats....usually for about 2 or more words) Here's how Taylor uses alliteration:

Song:Love Story
Lyric: "close your eyes, escape this town for a little while..."

(see where the "e" repeats in "eyes" and escape?")

Hyperbole: Big exaggeration (usually with humor!) believe it or not, you probably use a hyperbole everyday. For example: These books weigh a ton! OR  I could sleep forever!

Here's how Taylor uses a hyperbole:

Song: Mean
Lyric: "You can take me down, with just one single blow"

(Can you really? Probably not!)

Idiom: Doesn't mean what it's actually saying.
Song: Ours
Lyric: "People throw rocks at things that shine" "You never know what people have up their sleeve"

(People don't really throw rocks at shiny things on purpose......right? RIGHT?!??!)

Metaphor:  Comparing two unlike things to suggest they have something in common. Does not use like or as.

Lucky for us, T-Swift is full of metaphors!

Song: Our Song
Lyric: "Our song is the slamming screen door"
(Bonus: See those two words....slamming and screen? Alliteration, folks!!)

Song: Sparks Fly
Lyric: "I'm a house of cards"

Song: Blank Space
Lyric: "Love's a game, wanna play?"

Onomatopoeia: A word that is saying the sound it's making. Boom, Clap...the sound of my heart, the beat goes on, and on, and on....Oh wait, that's not T-Swizzle! Let's see where Taylor uses onomatopoeia.

Song:22
Lyric: 22, ooh, ooh

Personification:Making something non-living do something human.
Person=Human.

Song: Enchanted
Lyric: "Your eyes whispered, "have we met?"

(Since eyes can't whisper, she's telling us that eyes are doing something human by using...you guessed it....figurative language!)

Simile: Comparing two unlike things....usually using the words "like" or "as"
Teacher Tip: Underline "like" or "as" whenever you see them.  Chances are...you got a simile there, pal!

Song:Red
Lyric: "Losing him was blue like I've never known"
BONUS: "Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer"
BONUS:Loving him was like driving a Maserati down a dead end street"

Answer this question in the comments:

What is your favorite Taylor Swift song? If you don't like her that much (for shame!) who is your favorite singer?

  2. "You can take me down with just one single blow" is a cool line.

I see it mostly as an extension of the metaphors/similes from the previous verse where she's describing his weaponized words. So I think she mostly meant "blow" as the synonym for "punch" or "hit" rather than blowing air like the big bad wolf trying to blow down the little piggy's house. Although that does kind of work too since he is attacking her with words, which come out of one's mouth just like blown air.
