Websites for Daily Math and English Practice

Hello!

After break, your child is going to get baggies with spelling words in them. In addition, you will have weekly packets involving practice with these words and even basic math fact practice. Here are some websites you can look through to get extra practice.

Starfall
Starfall has basic phonics and reading practice.

XtraMath

Sign up for a free account to practice basic math facts.

I would suggest working on each skill for 15 minutes daily.

The Westing Game

(This obviously doesn't apply to you if you're reading Percy Jackson. Leave me a comment about your favorite part so far!)

In class, we're going to be starting The Westing Game, one of my favorite novels of all time. I explained in class that you're going to be getting your very own copy of the book to read at home. Here's a few ground rules:

1. Some stores were generous enough to donate them to our class for a discounted rate. Please treat them kindly.

2. There will be reading to do at home. You will get the complete study guide and you are expected to fill it out as we go along, chapter by chapter. There will be some pretty intense book discussions and it's important you read in class (in class, as a class) and at home in order to keep up and understand the novel.

"What if I read ahead?"

Response: That's fabulous. Definitely fill out the study guide as you go along.

3. You will be getting a bag of words to study at home, too. You will have spelling tests on these words, so study hard. I will be setting up a Quizlet and a Spelling City account for you to study from. No excuses :)

Hope you enjoy this book as much as I do. There may be some surprises as we go. :)

Here's a link to the audiobook on Youtube. You can also go to Audible.com and download the book for a credit (You get a credit just by signing up, folks! Free books rule)

Let's Read The Westing Game

Make Your Own Movies and Video Games

Hey Everyone!

Over the snow day break, I attended a webinar (seminars that are internet based) and learned about some really neat (and totally FREE) websites where you can create some really cool things.

The first website I learned about is called Sploder. You can make your own video games! How cool is that? Check it out here:

Sploder

You can also play games that others have created.  :-)

Perhaps you like to write your own stories. On Plotagon, you can make those stories come to life! It's totally free, and you just have to download it to your computer, or even your tablet.

Hope you enjoy playing around with these. I know I have! :)

Websites and Apps I LOVE :)

Well, Valentine's Day is coming up. You know what that means, love is in the air.
This year, I'm all about great websites and apps I can use in class to create a fun learning environment :)

(Does that make me lame?)

Anyway....

Class Dojo is my favorite app of all time. Available for iPhone, iPad, and Computer (Apple users...unite!) this app will monitor positive and negative behavior in the classroom. Reports are viewable by students, teachers, and parents (you got a letter about this last week)

www.classdojo.com

Go Noodle is my favorite website for brain breaks. You can choose from activities that require lots of movement (Zumba, Running) or you can choose something more calming like yoga, breathing, or just listening to soothing music.

There's a Whole World of Figurative Language!!

Hey Everyone,

Here's an assignment for you....

If you got my letter (which I hope you did, telling you about this blog...) leave a comment below in the comments section! It'll let me know you're visiting.

Today, we're going to talk about figurative language!

In class today, we discussed Taylor Swift and how she uses figurative language in her songs.
(Miss Battaglia loves Taylor Swift because she uses lots of figurative language! She's obsessed.)

So here are some examples of figurative language in Taylor Swift's songs!

Alliteration: repetition of beginning sounds (repetition=repeat. So, the beginning sound repeats....usually for about 2 or more words) Here's how Taylor uses alliteration:

Song:Love Story
Lyric: "close your eyes, escape this town for a little while..."

(see where the "e" repeats in "eyes" and escape?")

Hyperbole: Big exaggeration (usually with humor!) believe it or not, you probably use a hyperbole everyday. For example: These books weigh a ton! OR  I could sleep forever!

Here's how Taylor uses a hyperbole:

Song: Mean
Lyric: "You can take me down, with just one single blow"

(Can you really? Probably not!)

Idiom: Doesn't mean what it's actually saying.
Song: Ours
Lyric: "People throw rocks at things that shine" "You never know what people have up their sleeve"

(People don't really throw rocks at shiny things on purpose......right? RIGHT?!??!)

Metaphor:  Comparing two unlike things to suggest they have something in common. Does not use like or as.

Lucky for us, T-Swift is full of metaphors!

Song: Our Song
Lyric: "Our song is the slamming screen door"
(Bonus: See those two words....slamming and screen? Alliteration, folks!!)

Song: Sparks Fly
Lyric: "I'm a house of cards"

Song: Blank Space
Lyric: "Love's a game, wanna play?"

Onomatopoeia: A word that is saying the sound it's making. Boom, Clap...the sound of my heart, the beat goes on, and on, and on....Oh wait, that's not T-Swizzle! Let's see where Taylor uses onomatopoeia.

Song:22
Lyric: 22, ooh, ooh

Personification:Making something non-living do something human.
Person=Human.

Song: Enchanted
Lyric: "Your eyes whispered, "have we met?"

(Since eyes can't whisper, she's telling us that eyes are doing something human by using...you guessed it....figurative language!)

Simile: Comparing two unlike things....usually using the words "like" or "as"
Teacher Tip: Underline "like" or "as" whenever you see them.  Chances are...you got a simile there, pal!

Song:Red
Lyric: "Losing him was blue like I've never known"
BONUS: "Fighting with him was like trying to solve a crossword and realizing there's no right answer"
BONUS:Loving him was like driving a Maserati down a dead end street"

Answer this question in the comments:

What is your favorite Taylor Swift song? If you don't like her that much (for shame!) who is your favorite singer?
